For me it started a number of years ago when I was flying my
RV-9A. John Brick was starting up “Cascade Flight” and looking for additional
pilots to join up. Now learning formation in a RV-9A mixing it up with a bunch
of RV-4’s had it’s challenges, but John was always welcoming. I learned the
basics and pushed my flying skills and my RV-9A further than I had done over
the last 20 years of flying!
Flash forward and I finished up my RV-8 last year and
started flying. Marv and Randy have carried forward John’s model and love of
teaching more people about formation with a renewed Cascade Flight. Let me tell
you flying the RV-8 is better in every way for the mission, centerline seating
is ideal for formation, more horse power is always better, and short nimble
wings make maneuvering easier (and harder)… but the thing you learn over time
is that 99% of formation flying is about pilot skill not equipment capability.
These days our winter schedule has us flying on Sunday
afternoons when the weather is nice. Marv, Randy, Darin (with his RV-9A) and I
have been learning and flying together through the summer and into fall. We are
always looking for more people that want to join us and learn the basics to
build your formation skills.
Here’s a video from a recent flight
and some pictures that Dylan took during our flights
