Greetings everybody, this past month or so I have been working on changing the prop on my RV-9A from a fixed pitch Catto to a Constant speed WW200RV. I made a blog post on my personal blog that I thought some of you might be interested in reading. You can find the blog post here.
This past weekend while at the Arlington fly-in I had a few people ask my why I made the change and I had a really hard time answering that question. The hardest question to answer was "Is the change from fixed pitch to constant speed worth the expense?" Granted this is a very personal decision when you figure you can spend about $4000 on a fixed pitch prop and have an outstanding performing airplane. Yet add another $6000-8000 to the pot and you can significantly increase your takeoff performance (and get an in-air brake).
Anyway I discuss a few of the Pro's and Con's as I see them in my blog. With very little constant speed time under my belt I know there are things that I don't consider but at this time I think I can say with pretty assured confidence that it doesn't matter which prop you go with...the RV is going to perform!
